Freeway service patrol programs that enlist full-time support reduce incident duration by 15 to 30 percent over programs with part-time staff.A statistical analysis was conducted by the Portland State University to estimate the impacts of expanded freeway service patrol operations on Highway 18 and Interstate 5 near Eugene, Oregon. Reviewing approximately five years of data (1995 to 2000), researchers concluded that expanded freeway service patrol operations reduced incident delay by approximately 30 percent on rural Highway 18, and by 15 percent on Interstate 5. This represented an average decrease of 39 minutes on Highway 18, and 9 minutes on Interstate 5.See the related ITS Benefits Database entry for more information.
